Program history

USC football history

USC’s football history is inseparable from the Rose Bowl, Los Angeles, and the glamour of the West Coast. The Trojans became a national power under coaches like Howard Jones, whose teams in the 1920s and 1930s gave the program its first great championship identity. Playing in the Coliseum, USC could feel like a Hollywood version of college football: bright lights, big names, and postseason stages that carried national significance.

John McKay made USC one of the defining programs of the 1960s and 1970s. His teams were physical, stylish, and loaded with future NFL talent, and they helped establish the Trojans as a national brand rather than just a regional power. John Robinson continued that standard, and USC’s tradition became linked to tailbacks, linebackers, dominant line play, and the annual collision with Notre Dame.

The Trojans have produced one of the sport’s most recognizable collections of stars. Heisman winners, All-Americans, and first-round draft picks are woven into the program’s appeal, from O.J. Simpson and Marcus Allen to Charles White, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush, Troy Polamalu, and many more. USC’s best teams often felt both powerful and theatrical, able to overwhelm opponents while also giving the sport moments it replayed for decades.

Pete Carroll’s 2000s run restored USC to the center of college football, with national titles, epic Rose Bowl performances, and a run of recruiting that made the Trojans feel like an NFL pipeline. The program later faced turbulence, sanctions, and coaching changes, but its move into the Big Ten opened a new chapter. USC remains one of college football’s most compelling brands because its past combines old Rose Bowl tradition with modern celebrity and championship expectation.
